PRAISE FOR THE TROUBLE WITH MY AUNT

{Written from her heart, Hedi opens the world of her family to us with such wit, charm, drama and honesty. I felt I knew all her characters personally, and laughed and cried with them. Really a must read.

This was a really heart-warming read, I loved it. At times witty, sometimes a tearjerker, it was also a real page-turner. The characters are utterly believable and I was riveted from the start. I particularly loved the portrayal of the Jewish family. I found the technicalities of the genetic condition not only fascinating, but highly readable. Added to all of this, are some good twists and turns. I have shared this in my book club and it’s getting great reviews from the girls.

I so enjoyed this pacey read. Hedi writes with brutal honesty and empathy as this story unfolds – you will not be able to put this book down.

Hedi captures the dramatic impact that fragile X syndrome had on her family with a superb combination of fact, fiction and bags of Joburg Jewish nostalgia.

5 Glowing stars!!! If I could give it more I would! This book grabbed me from the first page! I loved it. It was so familiar to read being a Jewish mother living in Johannesburg.

“Every once in a while, a book comes along that not only grabs you from the first page, but fulfils its promise until the very end. Set in the Johannesburg of the last third of the 20th century the book is brimming with scenes and events t …more

“I seldom feel compelled to write book reviews but this one grabbed me by the throat.)
Strangely enough, this book, The trouble with my aunt, was not one that I intended reading at the moment. But somehow, when the Jewish Literary Festival was cancelled, along with so many other literary events, I was fortunate enough to have picked up a copy of this book.
And I have loved every single minute of it. Even prolonging the end because I wanted to savour it for longer.” Read more

“This amazing and unique book had me laughing out loud at some points, enthralled by the words of this witty author. At other times I sat with a cold stone of fear in the pit of my stomach. It is a roller coaster ride of life’s experiences, genetic rolls of the dice, and the human spirit’s ability to rise above.”
